Elevating the significance of military service: Knesset members and republican values

Through an analysis of the Israeli case, this paper explains why states add superfluous provisions that facilitate naturalization processes after military service. The Citizenship Law service in Israel will confer exemptions from list requirements toward naturalization. Amendments 1987 and 2004 35 proposed revisions also link with citizenship Israel. I argue those were enacted mainly for symbolic reasons. Republicanism is not just a characteristic particular polity but rhetorical trope politicians state. In Israel, wanted to emphasize importance republican participation, particularly through service, as ultimate sacrifice constructing national identity.
